Strong line up for LMP2 campaigns in Asia and FIA WEC

•          Blomqvist continues endurance career in LMP2 after GTE campaigns with BMW

•          Mercedes contracted Vandoorne re-activates sportscar career with JOTA

Leading global sportscar team, JOTA, has today confirmed the signing of Sean Gelael, Tom Blomqvist and Stoffel Vandoorne for one of its FIA World Endurance Championship entries in 2021. In addition to this programme, the same trio will race in the upcoming 2021 Asian Le Mans Series, which begins next month at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.

The talented trio will form a strong alliance for JOTA, which has enjoyed multiple endurance racing series accomplishments since it was founded in 2000. That heritage of success will be renewed in 2021 as JOTA aims for further LMP2 wins and title challenges in both the FIA WEC and the Asian Le Mans Series.

Gelael, Vandoorne and Blomqvist will race as a trio throughout the whole WEC campaign, while in the Asian Le Mans programme Gelael will run with Vandoorne for the first two rounds and then with Blomqvist for the final two. All four rounds will be held at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi during February.

Sean Gelael joins JOTA after a long and successful single-seater career which has seen him race in both Formula Three and GP2/F2 since 2013. From Jakarta, Indonesia, Gelael is not a complete newcomer to endurance racing however. He first raced in the Asian Le Mans Series in the 2015-16 season when he took two wins at Sepang, Malaysia and Buriram, Thailand alongside current Alfa Romeo F1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi. The pair finished third in the overall standings despite missing the first two rounds of the four rounds series.

The 24 year-old also showed his sportscar racing prowess in the FIA WEC and ELMS in 2016 with several top performances. Since that time he has competed exclusively in GP2/F2 with the Arden, Prema and DAMS squads.

Tom Blomqvist has forged an excellent reputation in junior categories taking a runner-up placing  in the 2014 FIA Formula Three European Championship behind current Alpine F1 star Esteban Ocon. That season Blomqvist, who is British but also has Swedish and New Zealand family roots, raced in the same team as Gelael. Blomqvist went on to race in the DTM for BMW where he scored a race win in the first of his three seasons at that level as a factory driver. Since that time he has raced in both in Formula E (Andretti and Jaguar) and in several global sportscar series, mostly IMSA and Blancpain GT, but also in the FIA WEC with BMW in 2018-19. As well as F3, Blomqvist also partnered Gelael briefly in a one-off WEC LMP2 driver at Shanghai in 2016 when they took second place at the 6 Hours of Shanghai. In 2021 Blomqvist will combine his endurance commitments with a full Formula E schedule at the NIO333 team.

Stoffel Vandoorne has enjoyed a successful professional career to date, which includes several title successes and critical acclaim as one of the quickest young drivers in the world. The 28 year-old Belgian took championships in Formula Renault and GP2 before completing two seasons in Formula One with McLaren-Honda. Since 2018 he has been a leading driver in FIA Formula E, first with the HWA Racelab team, and then the factory Mercedes-Benz EQ operation with which he won his first Formula E race in Berlin last summer. Vandoorne has also starred in sportscars having raced for the SMP Racing operation briefly in 2019 where he claimed third places at both his home circuit of Spa and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Last season JOTA took second and third positions in the drivers’ standings and a runners-up in the teams title chase, after taking two LMP2 wins. Among a fine roster of triumphs, JOTA has taken LMP2 wins at Le Mans in both 2014 and 2017. In total, the team has won 14 LMP2 WEC races. The Kent based team has also achieved the remarkable record of having either won or finished second seven times in the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 2014.
